The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth, the landscape is magnificent with volcanic plains, ponds (water holes) created by pressure from within the earth and night skies that intertwine human existence with the cosmos, opening up for reflection.
In Transatlantic Diaries, Flor and Lisa show works from their residency trip to the Atacama Desert in Chile. A journey where we explored the state of in-betweenness, identity and how objects and rituals are crucial to the creation of ourselves, a common thread in both of our artistic works. Not being Swedish enough in Sweden and not being Chilean enough in Chile sharpens the ability to adapt. The outside perspective allows you to see structures in an otherwise white space, Flor with a Chilean mother and a Swedish father and Lisa, adopted from Chile, raised by Swedish parents.
The journey gave us an opportunity to create a deeper connection to our roots. Together we were able to explore in-betweenness and identity in a context that is central to us but so far unexplored from the Chilean perspective in Chile.
La Wayaka Current is an artist-run residency in the Atacama Desert in Chile that collaborates with the indigenous Lickan Antays with whom we stayed during the residency.
