WORKSHOP: THE FUTURE OF QUEER TATTOOING
A practical skills workshop for beginners, focused on hygiene and safety, by Alex Cfourpo
The best way to get into tattooing is through an apprenticeship, and I would recommend this to anyone. But, this is not easy, and there aren’t a lot of studios that are explicitly safe for queer and trans people and people of color. Realistically, most people I know got into tattooing by starting out at home – and this is exactly what I did 10 years ago.
A disclaimer: Unless you have a dedicated, professional home studio, it’s not possible to achieve the standard of hygiene and safety of a tattoo studio in a home environment. This workshop is not made to encourage people to tattoo or get tattooed in ways that are unsafe. I realize, from experience, that people are going to tattoo at home anyway, and with this workshop i want to help you do this as safe as possible.
If you’re bipoc, queer, or trans, and tattooing outside of a studio in any capacity, this workshop is for you. There is space for 10 people to take part in the workshop. Write to queertattooexposthlm@gmail.com if you’d like to join, and please let me know if there are specific things you’d like to learn!
